Meet Your Physician

Roberto Gonzalez, MD

Dr. Gonzalez was born and raised in the Rio Grande Valley and is fluent in both English and Spanish. He attended Edinburg North High School where he graduated as valedictorian. Despite getting pulled out of class for some persuasion by then Governor George W. Bush, a young Dr. Gonzalez decided to politely decline an offer letter from Yale University in order to attend his local University of Texas Pan-American under full academic scholarship, participating in the Baylor College of Medicine – UT Pan-American Premedical Honors College. Dr. Gonzalez graduated with honors, earning a Bachelor’s of Science, majoring in Biology and minoring in Chemistry, English and Philosophy. He then attended The University of Texas Health Science Center-Houston School of Medicine where he earned his medical degree, began his residency training in psychiatry at The University of Texas Medical Branch-Galveston, and completed his final two years of training at UTHSC-Houston.

Midway into his final year of training, Dr. Gonzalez joined The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center (UTMDACC) as part-time Clinical Specialist, covering hospital duties over the weekend for the Department of Psychiatry -a position he would hold until joining UTMDACC full time as Assistant Professor at the start of 2013. Dr. Gonzalez spent his first four years taking care of his patients both on the wards (Psychosomatic Medicine or “Consult & Liaison Psychiatry”) and in his outpatient clinic, all while supervising and training budding medical students from both local medical schools, as well as psychiatry residents in training from UTHSC-Houston. His final five years at UTMDACC were spent serving as Assistant Professor for the Department of Behavioral Sciences. This role would allow him to continue his practice of psychiatry, while concurrently gaining a greater depth and breadth of experience in academic psychiatry, clinical research, and addiction medicine.

While practicing and teaching clinical psychiatry at the largest medical center and largest cancer teaching hospital in the world had it’s unique learning experiences and opportunities, Dr. Gonzalez eventually discovered that the additional responsibilities and administrative duties that came along with academic medicine took significant time away from what he enjoyed most -spending more quality time with his patients. Dr. Gonzalez started Concordia Psychiatry in order to pursue what he does best and enjoys most -providing quality care to his patients and giving everyone sufficient time to be heard and understood. Come see how Concordia can help you live at and achieve your fullest.
